Gutenberg Monument (Eltville/Rhine)

- Castle of the Sovereigns Elect Eltville/Rhine, photo: Tourist Information and Cultural Office Eltville/Rhine
Apart from historical prints and printing utensils the small Gutenberg Museum in the castle tower of the Castle of the Sovereigns Elect shows an old Florentine printing press. The Gutenberg Monument was established by the castle’s association “Burgverein e.V. Eltville“ and with movable letters commemorates the inventor of letterpress printing, Johannes Gutenberg, who lived and worked in Eltville in the 15th century, in an impressive way. Several times a year public printing days are organised at the Gutenberg Monument; original graphics just like during Gutenberg’s times can be printed with the Florentine printing press on this day.
The historical collection in the chapters’ chamber contains precious documents about the town’s history. Among others it houses finds dating back to early history, valuable stiches with images of Eltville as well as coins.
The castle tower also has an observation platform. Those who make it up here are rewarded with a spectacular view overlooking Eltville/Rhine, the Rheingau and Rhine Hesse as well as the Rhine Main Area.
